Job Title: MSV Naval Architect

Location: Norfolk, VA (Corporate Office)

Travel: Periodic travel to ship sites and other locations as required

Purpose/Summary:

We are seeking an experienced MSV Naval Architect to support the Maritime Support Vessel (MSV) program by developing innovative solutions for vessel alterations, modifications, conversions, and technical upgrades. This role plays a critical part in designing and producing engineering deliverables, overseeing project execution, and ensuring technical excellence in all aspects of ship design and modification.

The ideal candidate will be a hands-on problem solver, capable of working independently and collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment. Occasional leadership of cross-functional project teams may be required for special initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop technical solutions for changes, upgrades, conversions, and modifications related to the MSV program.
  • Create work specifications, technical drawings, and documentation to support contractor quoting and regulatory review processes.
  • Conduct detailed engineering analyses, including mechanical and naval architecture evaluations, finite element analysis (FEA), and loading condition assessments.
  • Produce 2D and 3D CAD engineering and one-line design drawings across ship systems (structural, piping, electrical, HVAC, etc.).
  • Generate photo-realistic renderings of ships, systems, and components as needed.
  • Champion shipboard and workplace safety; contribute to a strong safety culture.
  • Lead and support continuous improvement projects with attention to cost-efficiency and timelines.
  • Assist with preparation of shipyard specifications, vendor selection, and optimal use of ship personnel during shipyard periods.
  • Support the Program Manager and MSV General Manager in project execution and team collaboration.

Qualifications:

  • Required:
  • B.S. in Naval Architecture
  • Minimum of 10 years of vessel design and project management experience
  • Eligible for a Secret-level security clearance
  • Proficiency in the following tools:
  • 2D/3D CAD & Modeling: AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Navisworks, Rhinoceros & ORCA 3D, Maxsurf Pro
  • Engineering Analysis: NEiNastran & FEMAP (FEA), Multiframe 4D, HydroMax Pro, NavCad, Pipe-Flo
  • General Software: MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook), Project, Visio
  • Preferred:
  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (in addition to Naval Architecture)
  • Advanced degree in business, logistics, or related field
  • PMP Certification
  • Experience with Marine Management Software (Nautical Systems preferred)

  • Proven technical writing, documentation, and report development skills.
  • Effective leadership, negotiation, and conflict resolution capabilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience in the installation and commissioning of marine electronic equipment (e.g., integrated bridge systems, networking systems).
  • Commitment to high-quality standards, continuous improvement, and safety.
