Job Description

Title: Operations & Maintenance Worker I/II/III

Starting: $19.32 /hr

 

O&M I – Entry/Training/Junior level position. This class provides individuals with exposure to District water operations and maintenance under direct guidance of the Team Lead. Expected to perform any, or a combination of, tasks of a higher grade but are in a training capacity and therefore are held to a training level of proficiency. 

Objective

Under general supervision of the Team Lead or other assigned individual, operates manual and automated control systems to deliver raw water to grower meters and to ensure timely delivery of those supplies; provides oversight of one or more assigned lines; maintains the District’s systems; and performs other related work as required.

 

Essential Functions

The duties of this job relate specifically to the movement of large amounts of water from an open canal system through the District’s pipe system for final delivery to grower meters and requires considerable judgment in coping with manual and automated control systems, weather, grower demands, and other variances in system operations. 

Typical Examples of Duties

1. Delivers water to growers within the District through the use of meters and valves and reports meter readings to the Assistant General Manager or assigned individual.

2. Balances assigned lines through the use of manual and automated control systems.

3. Patrols assigned lines to evaluate system performance, look for leaks, pest control (herbaceous or animal), system deterioration or other issues that may affect the performance of their assigned lines.

4. Completes daily work orders and reports conditions to the Assistant General Manager or other assigned individual.

5. Performs maintenance functions on the system as assigned by the Assistant General Manager or other assigned individual.

 

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to environmental settings associated with construction job sites, agricultural farmland, and wetlands. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of weather conditions at job sites; including extreme heat and rain. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. The position regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, traffic, and exposure to dust. 

 

Physical Demands

The position lifts heavy objects, walks and stands for long periods of time and performs strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions. The employee lifts, pushes, pulls or carries objects; uses abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue; and frequently climbs up and down ladders. The position requires good manual dexterity (hand, hand with arm, two hands) and multilimbed coordination. The position requires the ability to quickly move arms and legs. The employee must have good overall physical heath consistent with construction and fieldwork.

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., 40 hours per week. Summer Hours are Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This position frequently requires working weekends, holidays and off-shift hours.

 

Travel

Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some overnight travel may be expected for On-Call personnel. Local travel to various worksites is required.

 

Required Education and Experience

High school diploma or its equivalent, and exposure to one or more trade skills such as meter repair, welding, carpentry, cement work, electrical work, construction, or equipment operations. 

 

Preferred Education and Experience

Knowledge of - water supply characteristics, water flow and quantity measurement, control structures and operating principles of valves, pumps, meters, and other mechanical devices found in a gravity/pumped pipeline distribution system; safety precautions relating to the work.

 

Skilled in - tactfully communicating with growers, subordinates, peers and supervisors the status of water lines or other delivery issues; recognizing unusual operating conditions and taking appropriate action; reading and interpreting meters, gauges and various recording devices accurately; maintaining accurate and complete records of operating conditions.

 

Ability to - anticipate changes in system delivery and independently take appropriate action to control the water; work long hours alone or with others under all types of weather conditions; be extremely observant of all field conditions; identify and report accurately all pertinent data; and follow through on specific tasks.

 

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

Must possess a California Class C driver's license, or able to obtain one, and have a satisfactory driving record.
