Job Description

Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Civil Engineer to lead a team of project managers and engineers in the design and execution of residential, commercial, and public development projects. This role involves close collaboration with clients to maintain a steady pipeline of projects, ensuring efficient completion of design, permitting, and construction while adhering to project budgets and timelines. The ideal candidate will be passionate about civil engineering, with a proven track record of managing complex projects from inception to completion.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Team Management:
  • Lead and mentor a team of project managers and civil engineers, fostering a collaborative environment that supports professional growth and skill development.
  • Client Relations & Business Development:
  • Cultivate and maintain strong client relationships, ensuring repeat business opportunities and identifying new business prospects.
  • Design & Project Management:
  • Oversee civil engineering designs, including preparation of construction drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and reports across various projects.
  • Permitting & Compliance:
  • Manage the permitting process for projects, ensuring timely approvals and compliance with relevant codes and regulations.
  • Project Scheduling & Budgeting:
  • Develop and manage project schedules and budgets, providing accurate forecasts and ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Collaboration & Communication:
  • Communicate effectively with clients, agencies, contractors, and internal teams to ensure smooth project execution.
  • Mentorship & Staff Development:
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior staff, supporting their professional growth and development.
  • Quality Assurance & Process Improvement:
  • Ensure adherence to QA/QC procedures within the design teams and actively contribute to improving company resources and processes for better efficiency and quality.

Core Duties:

  • Lead and manage a team of project managers and engineers.
  • Build strong client relationships and drive business development.
  • Oversee the development of engineering designs, reports, construction drawings, specifications, and calculations.
  • Lead initial project layouts that meet client needs and comply with relevant codes.
  • Manage permitting strategies to ensure timely project approvals.
  • Develop and manage project schedules, budgets, and resources.
  • Represent clients in hearings and handle project appeals.
  • Engage in professional and technical organizations to stay current with industry trends.
  • Mentor junior staff and serve as a technical resource.
  • Prepare fee estimates and ensure project deliverables align with client expectations.
  • Conduct technical reviews of staff reports and deliverables.
  • Contribute to company process improvements and resource development.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Strong technical expertise with excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Extensive experience preparing plans, specifications, cost estimates, and providing engineering support for municipal projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of the permitting process and strategies.
  • Solid understanding of land use codes and feasibility reports.
  • Proven problem-solving skills with a focus on efficiency and effective solutions.
  • Strong leadership capabilities and experience managing teams.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and civil engineering software (Civil 3D, Bluebeam).
  • Ability to develop new business from both existing and new clients.

Education and Experience:

  • Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience:
  • 15+ years of progressive engineering and management experience, with a focus on land development projects.
  • Licensing:
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license required; multi-state licensure preferred.
  • Other Requirements:
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
